What Is Clinical Social Work?

Clinical social work services at CPTWC supports the social, emotional, and mental well-being of both the children, and their families. By utilizing a client-centered, and relationship-based approach, our clinical social workers strive to foster emotional safety, and functional emotional development. Through a holistic lens, clinical social work will help families identify stressors to best understand where behaviors stem from and meet them where they’re at.

This can address areas such as: challenging family dynamics, social skills, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, behavioral concerns, major life changes/transitions, trauma, poor self-esteem, and challenges within the school environment. Social work will offer individual sessions, family sessions, group therapy, parent consultations and advocacy, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and school staff. Our social workers will implement a variety of evidence-based practices which are rooted in a rich understanding of children in the context of their families, communities, and cultural identities. Examples of evidence-based practices include cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, play-based therapy, art-based interventions, safety planning, and crisis intervention. Hannah Scher, MSW, LCSW

Hannah Scher is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 5 years of experience specializing in working with children, adolescents, and their families. She received her bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and her master’s degree in social work from Jane Addams School of Social Work (UIC). Hannah’s therapy approach is relationship-based and person-centered, as she believes a solid relationship is foundational to social-emotional development. Her method to treatment is through a holistic and trauma-informed lens to support individuals, identify and understand their emotions, emotionally process their experiences, and develop healthy coping strategies.

She incorporates a variety of treatment modalities into sessions such as play-based therapy, art-based interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness. Hannah strongly believes there is not a ‘one-sized fits all’ therapeutic approach, therefore, each session and treatment plan will be carefully curated to fit the needs of the individual’s profile. She has experience advocating and supporting individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, with developmental disabilities, and/or mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, adjustment disorder, grief/loss, and trauma. She has experience providing this support in settings such as outpatient pediatric clinics, therapeutic schools, inpatient care, and through private practice.
