Mealtime is often a cherished family experience, filled with laughter, bonding, and nourishment. But for some families, it can become a source of daily stress and worry when a child struggles with mealtime success. If you’ve ever watched your child refuse food, cough while swallowing, or struggle to gain weight, you know how emotional and overwhelming this journey can feel. At our multidisciplinary pediatric therapy clinic, we’re here to walk alongside you and your child. We turn mealtime struggles into mealtime victories!

What is Feeding Therapy?

Feeding therapy is more than just helping children eat — it’s about helping them thrive and enjoy the process. It’s about understanding the unique journey each child and family experiences. Whether a child is dealing with medical, sensory, or behavioral challenges, our therapists meet families where they are, providing compassionate care every step of the way.

Our speech therapists work hand-in-hand with families to make mealtime a positive and enjoyable experience again. By using play-based techniques, eliminating pressure and focusing on exposure and encouragement, we help children feel more comfortable and confident around food.

How Can Speech Therapy Help with Feeding Concerns?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) bring a unique perspective to the area of pediatric feeding and swallowing. They blend science and care to support children’s development. They are experts in the mechanics of how we eat. But they also understand the emotional and social aspects of mealtimes as well. Here’s just a few ways of how they can help:

  • Dysphagia (Swallowing Disorders): If your child has trouble swallowing, coughs frequently during meals, or avoids certain textures, an SLP can assess their swallowing function and create a safe, customized plan for eating, and/or provide your next appropriate referral.
  • Oral Motor Challenges: When children struggle to chew food or form a proper seal on bottles or cups, it can make mealtime frustrating. Our therapists use fun games and exercises to strengthen mouth muscles and improve coordination for eating and drinking.
  • Sensory-Based Feeding Difficulties: Some children feel overwhelmed by new tastes, smells, or textures. With patience and creativity, we gently introduce new foods in a way that feels safe and enjoyable for the child. Our SLPs also collaborate with our in-house OTs who are our sensory feeding experts!
  • Picky Eating: If your child eats only a handful of foods or shows distress at mealtimes, we help uncover the root cause and create personalized strategies to expand their diet.
