Heather Winegard, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a certified speech-language pathologist who brings over 15 years of pediatric expertise to families at Chicago Pediatric Therapy & Wellness Center. Since joining the clinic in 2017, Heather has helped hundreds of children overcome communication barriers and feeding challenges, empowering them to express their needs, connect with others, and participate fully in daily life. Heather's educational journey began at Butler University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2008. This undergraduate foundation sparked her passion for helping children develop the fundamental human skill of communication. She continued her training at Arizona State University, earning her Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2010, followed by successful completion of her Clinical Fellowship Year and ASHA certification. As a CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology), Heather has demonstrated advanced knowledge and adherence to the highest professional standards set by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical practice addresses the full spectrum of pediatric communication needs, including expressive language development such as vocabulary expansion, grammar usage, and narrative skills; receptive language comprehension including following multi-step directions and understanding complex concepts; functional communication strategies for children with limited verbal abilities; articulation and phonological disorders affecting speech clarity; and feeding and swallowing disorders that impact oral motor skills and safe eating. Heather's therapy sessions are carefully individualized to match each child's developmental level, learning style, and family priorities. She collaborates closely with parents and caregivers, providing coaching and home practice activities that reinforce skills between sessions. Her ability to make therapy engaging and her commitment to celebrating every communication milestone—whether it's a first word, a clear sentence, or successful mealtime—reflect her deep understanding that communication is connection, and every child deserves to be heard.
Read Less →As I sat down for my first teletherapy session, my mind was reeling! How would I pull this off? I wanted to do it in a way that was efficient, effective, and entertaining. Every treatment strategy that I had up to this point had been based off of face to face contact. Needless to say, I was hesitant to fully trust in this new way of providing our service.
After jumping in, it didn’t take long for me to discover the many benefits that teletherapy can offer. After that, I encountered more of the unknowns head on. I quickly came to a realization of all of the positives of this new method. Suddenly, things I did not expect were beginning to become my focus.

My kiddos were so excited to show me special items or rooms of their home. They loved to have me meet family members I may not have met before. Many were equally interested in my home, as well! This all sparked great conversation. It also allowed for a great deal of comfort and security heading into each session.
With each family’s schedule and situation varying, I had many families ask for shifts in scheduling. I was easily able to make it work. When daily schedules changed, we weren’t forced to cancel or reschedule sessions to the following week. It was easy for us to find a mutual time to meet online. Sessions are essentially “at our fingertips!”
In many instances, I wondered how I would be able to present therapy materials. Would I be able to continue to make sessions as entertaining and fun? It’s hard to beat an awesome in person session. Thankfully, this is a widely-used resource. Teletherapy had been and is currently being used across the globe. It is extremely popular in areas where therapists are not readily available.
Thanks to the history of it, I was able to access a wide variety of materials. After finding some good options, I immediately put them use. I found that my creativity grew. In turn, the child’s curiosity grew with this new method of service delivery.
Perhaps my favorite discovery in using teletherapy, has been the opportunity to put the power back in the caregivers’ hands. This new method has provided my families and I with so much. In addition, we have the opportunity to change over from therapist provided care. Now fully integrated, collaborative care is readily available. I am able to directly provide strategies and immediate feedback to children.
I then can continue the conversation with the caregivers. After that, therapy can continue beyond the session. I often give rewards and offer check ups to ensure that it is already directly structured within the family’s home.
We are all coping with changes during these crazy times. I recognize the benefits of this service for its current use. However, the recent success stories through these sessions points toward a future full of these sessions. For instance, this option will come in handy when the weather is bad. Also, when a family member is ill, or when your school or daycare is closed, let’s utilize use it!
In other words, we’ve found that it works. It will aid in our ability to deliver treatment now and in the future! Similarly, I am excited to find new and creative ways to do sessions. Above all, continuing to keep children engaged and learning should be the priority.
In conclusion, we know it wasn’t expected, but it has certainly changed my view on virtual sessions! To schedule your child’s assessment or sessions at CPTWC, call our office today at 773-687-9241!
