Intensive Therapy Camp for children
with one-sided weakness

December 2016

Children with one-sided weakness (Hemiparesis), are challenged everyday with activities of daily living such as playing with peers, performing age-appropriate games/sports, or engaging in self-care tasks. This has an effect on their overall strength, coordination and integration of both sides of their body. All Stars Camp is designed to motivate children to use both sides of their body in order to functionally complete tasks of daily living and play. Research has shown that incorporating intensive encouragement of both hands together, as well as targeting the use of the weaker side, has been proven to enhance overall independent performance. Using this principle, we have developed a two week camp for children to work side-by-side with their peers while participating in fun, game activities aimed at improving range of motion, strength, bilateral use and ability to perform functional tasks independently.

In addition to this intensive approach, we are excited to have an additional adjunct in our winter camp which will assist with hand function and our pre-test/post-test assessment for the duration of camp. The “Amadeo,” a robotic, computer-assisted device, assists in a natural grasp pattern, both passively and actively. It is connected to computer-based games which increases the motivation for children.

The camp will be led by occupational therapists and physical therapists and 1:1 support will be provided by trained volunteers. Billing options include self-pay, use of insurance or a combination of both.
